Founder Story

Founder, Sarah Dale, has been both a C-Suite Executive and mountain adventurer. Project 1490 is a combination of two big chapters of her life where she envisioned a way to empower other women and build a much-needed community.

IT STARTED ON A WHIM

Jersey girl moves to Montana

I was 24 when I moved from New York City to Montana after a solo vacation to Big Sky. Over the next seven years, I was lucky enough to meet people who introduced me to adventures I never thought I'd experience.

Life In Big Sky

Building Badassery

Learning how to brand cattle, hunt with a bow, build a house, and all kinds of mountain sports; I discovered aspects of myself I hadn't known were there. Without realizing it, I was building a confidence and self-reliance that would prove invaluable in my life and career.

I also fell madly in love with nature.

The Idea

A New Adventure

I wanted other women to have similar, transformative experiences without having to move to Big Sky. I started to craft a new venture: I would bring city women out to Montana for "Outward Bound" meets "Oprah" type retreats. They'd have amazing experiences, go beyond themselves, reconnect with nature, and return to their lives with a new sense of who they were and what they were capable of.It was going to be amazing.

But, it wasn't meant to be. I got divorced, moved back to NYC in survival mode, and jumped back into a career in advertising

Fast Forward

Forging My Career

Over the next 20 years in NYC, I had a great career. I rose up the ranks at The Wall Street Journal and ended up as the first female C-level executive at an ad tech company. But this dream from Montana just kept bugging me.

Finally, I put it together that these seemingly opposite sides of my life were actually just the ingredients this 22-year-old idea was waiting for...

and all I had to do was take the leap.

Most events in the first year are based in the New York area, but the vision is much wider. Retreats and experiences are already being planned across the United States and internationally — from Montana to Croatia. Wherever the community grows, Project 1490 will follow.

Join today by choosing a membership level and get started right away. You're also invited to check out a Day of Badassery or book a Zoom to find out more.

The Grit Lab is Project 1490's corporate speaking and workshop offering, led by founder Sarah. It brings the Project 1490 ethos into workplace settings — helping teams align better, move faster, and build genuine community at work. If your organisation is looking for something that actually shifts culture rather than just fills a training calendar, this is it.

Not entirely. Membership unlocks the full community, monthly events, and member benefits — but Days of Badassery outdoor events are open to qualifying non-members as a way to experience what Project 1490 is all about before committing to a membership.

The belief is simple: high-achieving women spend so much energy performing at work that they lose touch with other parts of themselves. Project 1490 creates the conditions to rediscover both sides — the grit and the grace, the ambition and the wildness. As the community puts it: part wilderness, part wakeup call.
