Ok, if you've got a backyard or small outdoor space to practice, it doesn't take much more to start learning to lasso. 1. You're gonna need a rope. This is one thing you don't want to buy on Amazon. You want a rope that's already worn in. You can get one here from Etsy.

The next two steps are optional, but help get the motions into your body before you try it with a rope.
Get a Broom. Yup, start with a broom. If you wave the broom above your head and keep it going, that's the same motion you'll make with your arm and hand to spin the lasso.
Remember Skipping Rocks?. The motion you use to skip a rock is similar to the motion you use to release the rope. We can leave aside how well you skip rocks, but the idea that you don't throw the rope, you release it; seems helpful. If you want to grab a flat rock to remind yourself how that goes, you can!
Grab a Bucket. You'll want something to aim at and a bucket will do, as you may not happen to have a hay bale and a plastic steer head hanging around, but you don't need one.
Watch This Guy: This is the most helpful video I've seen for a step-by-step tutorial for beginners.
Remember, the first time you do something is the worst time. And when it comes to roping, that might be true for a lot of times! Your brain has to get it first, and then your body will; so be patient with yourself. (It's harder than it looks, but fun!) And, if you actually try this, give yourself a lot of CREDIT too for learning something new! We'll have the lassos (and the cowheads) out at Days of Badassery, so you can always give it try in good company! (Maura (in the picture) was pregnant at the time she tried it! If she can do it, you can too.)
