Two weeks ago, I decided to learn to rope.
It might have been thanks to watching all the Yellowstones for the second time, but I just got a hankerin’ to learn how to lasso. (You can legit say things like “hankerin’” when you’re learning to lasso).
I did attempt this once before, truth be told, when real cowboys tried to teach me in Montana. I wasn’t very good at it and it was definitely harder than it looked. This time, I started where most suburban journeys start: on Amazon & YouTube.
While I was waiting for my new lariat and fake metal cow to arrive, I practiced the ![]() movement that we’re all very familiar with and watched a whole lot of cowboys on YouTube make it look easy. I ran into a slight glitch when my “cow” arrived and it was about 12 inches long. To the surprise of exactly no one in my family, I hadn’t checked the dimensions of my fake cow before purchase (see pic below - Annie included for scale).
So, while I practice without a target waiting from my next Amazon delivery, I thought I’d share the journey.
FOLLOWING IMPULSES: Here’s the thing: we all get impulses to do shit. For myself, the reasons why I “can’t” follow them are a-plenty: work…kids…house…tomorrow’s better, etc. etc. But I’ve found a lot of cool stuff happens when I follow my impulses and when I do, I realize: they are where my life really lies. In fact, most great stories and great relationships of my life started by following a whim.
Part of Project 1490 is to make it easy for very busy, executive women to follow their own impulses. First, we are witnesses for those whims that often get ignored or buried — “I always wanted to…” out loud, can go a long way. Then, we get it organized. We’ll find the place members can do that thing they’ve been longing to do, and finally, we’ll find them other awesome women to do them with. (And that makes it networking and good for business, so we can get over the “I can’t take the time for myself” part we seem to all contend with.)
What have you always wanted to try? Wish you could do? I’d love to hear! You never know where these things can lead once you say them out loud to another person (especially one that will go find where you can do it!).
Giddy Up, Sarah
